About the Role

We’re searching for a registered vet nurse – we would be just as happy if you are newly qualified or if you have loads of experience – we have plenty of expertise in the practice to help you learn and develop.

Job Requirements

• Able to work collaboratively within a team environment.
• Just as comfortable with people as pets – excellent client communications help us to build trust.
• Happy with or happy to learn all elements of veterinary nursing – from managing sick pets to anaesthetics, from weight clinics to theatre prep.
• Nurse clinics – these are massively important to us. They take pressure off the vets, but more importantly, they allow clients to interact with the whole clinical team and benefit from the amazing expertise of our nurses.
• Be an ambassador for The Finchley Vet in the vet industry and wider community.

Proposed Schedule

• Monday: 8:30am–5:00pm
• Tuesday: 12:00pm–7:30pm
• Wednesday: 12:00pm–7:30pm
• Thursday: 8:30am–4:00pm
• Friday: 10:30am–6:00pm (preferred), or alternatively a rotating 8:30am–4:00pm / 12:00pm–7:30pm shift
• Saturday: 9:00am–1:30pm (one in three)
• We pay all the hours of your shift – including your lunch breaks – but that doesn’t mean we expect you to work over lunch. In fact, we are militant about protecting lunch breaks for all of our team.

Our recently revamped main practice includes a spacious kitchen, team room, and a shower for those who cycle, gym, or need to freshen up. Clinically, we have x-ray, ultrasound, a dedicated theatre, separate cat and dog wards, peripatetic specialists (Ortho and ST surgery, ophtho, endoscopy, cardiology), a bronchoscope, dedicated dental suite (with dental x-rays) – and…clients who will usually allow us to use them!!

About You

You will have a passion for veterinary nursing, wanting to work as part of a team to achieve more than we could achieve individually.

You will be a Veterinary Nurse (registered with the RCVS). This role would suit a nurse who has 0–5 years of post-qualification experience, but we would be more than delighted to hear from you if you are more experienced.

Job Responsibilities

Setting up / clearing down surgery – theatre / consulting rooms including:

• Maintaining and sterilising surgical equipment.
• Shutting down theatre / cleaning up after surgery.
• Maintaining stock levels in consult rooms – pharma and non-pharma.
• High standards of hygiene in cleaning.
• Managing clinical waste.
• Appropriate storage of medication.
• Proper and timely maintenance of lab equipment.
• Maintaining the cleanliness and tidiness of the clinical areas.

Carrying out nursing tasks, which include:

• Administering medications, caring for hospitalised patients, and monitoring patients under anaesthetic (under veterinary surgeon’s direction).
• Preparing animals for surgery, including clipping and prepping the surgical site.
• Performing and assisting with a range of diagnostic procedures, including blood sampling, hair plucks, faecal testing, urine analysis, etc.
• Preparing and sending samples to the laboratory for analysis.
• Administering injections, such as 2nd vaccinations, Librela, and Solensia under veterinary direction.
• Providing clients with general animal care advice, as well as tailored guidance on puppy and kitten care, including nutrition, parasite prevention, vaccinations, behaviour, etc.

Practice Administration

• Meeting and greeting clients in the practice.
• Noting good, comprehensive notes on the computer system about client conversations/advice that has been given.
• Ensuring that customers are charged realistically for services (e.g. nurse-led clinics).
• Activities as instructed by the Head Vet Nurse – e.g. stock takes, disposal or sorting of sterility-expired equipment.
• Telephone answering – in line with practice policy and style.
• Maintaining stock levels – pharma and non-pharma (including controlled drugs).
• Ensuring appropriate storage of medication (e.g. temperature control) and regular monitoring of this.

Performance Management

Attend appraisals with manager at intervals deemed appropriate by the leadership team.

Qualifications and Training Required

• A recognised RCVS award – either the vocational Veterinary Nurse Scheme (VNS) or a four-year veterinary nursing degree.
• Registration (nurse register) with the RCVS.
• Driving licence desirable.

Reports To

Head Vet Nurse – for clinical and non-clinical matters (e.g. performance, etc.).

About the Role:
We’re searching for a Head Vet/Clinical Director to inspire and lead a team of four vets.

Job Requirements:

• Exceptional level of General Practice Clinical Veterinary Medicine – experience with CT would be desirable.

• Maintaining clinical standards across all teams – through training and maintaining skills and knowledge

• Excellent and demonstrable leadership skills – across the entire team

• Ability to drive and maintain client loyalty and satisfaction

• Work collaboratively with the Nurse Manager and Practice Manager to drive the team forward

• Safeguard the welfare of the team

• Be an ambassador for The Finchley Vet in the vet industry and wider community

Proposed Schedule:

Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri: 8:30–19:30
Saturday (1:3): 9:00–13:30

• Clinical Excellence (approx. 80% of your time will be spent clinically)
• Ensure all members of the team are supported to perform to their full potential

• Clinical governance – ensuring the team practices evidence based medicine, identifying clinical performance issues, implementing plans to understand and improve the issues. Using clinical audits where appropriate to aid in this.

Non-clinical Roles and Responsibilities:

• CPD and training:
  • Facilitating and organising internal CPD and lunch and learns
  • Assist colleagues in identifying and booking CPD
  • Clinical training for non-clinical staff – where appropriate to aid in their jobs.
• Recruitment:
  • Assist and advice in recruitment for clinical roles (e.g. nursing and VCA roles)
  • Direct involvement in recruitment of Veterinary Surgeons (with support)
• Business Performance:
  • Understand and learn the business model, P and L and KPIs of the business
  • Understand P and L and contribute to constant improvement in this.
  • Control costs where under your control – e.g. prescribing habits, staffing usage etc.
  • Work within budgeting frameworks to deliver financial success
• Community Engagement:
  • Create and maintain educational resources and events for the wider community
• Performance Management:
  • Monitor, feedback and improve performance of the team through regular performance management meetings, 121s and 360 feedback sessions.
  • Self reflect and improve personal performance aided by meetings with your manager (Practice Owner).
• Culture:
  • Maintain a professional, ‘completer-finisher’ culture within the organisation with the free flow of information in all directions
  • Provide timely, professional and constructive responses and feedback to colleagues in response to concerns or problems that become apparent.
  • Maintain the reputation and integrity of the practice
• Health and Safety:
  • Ensure clinical activities are conducted with appropriate safe guards and training to ensure the health and safety of all.
  • Review and update all clinically relevant risk assessment and H&S policies annually and when required.
