How to Collect a Urine Sample from your Dog

Step 1: Choose a Suitable Container

If you have collected a sterile urine sample pot from us, please use this.
If not, use a clean, sterilised container.
Do not use jam or honey jars, as any leftover residue can affect the glucose reading and lead to inaccurate test results.
You can also purchase a Uripet from us, which urine collection device designed to make it easier to collect a urine sample from dogs.

Step 2: Take Your Dog Outside

Take your dog to the garden or wherever they usually urinate.
Try to act as normally as possible, as some dogs can become suspicious if they think you’re following them.

Step 3: Collect the Sample

As your dog begins to urinate, carefully place the container under the urine stream.

Step 4: Secure the Sample

Tightly screw the lid onto the container to prevent leaks or contamination.

Step 5: Store the Sample (If Needed)

Bring the sample to the practice as soon as possible.
If you cannot bring it in straight away, keep it in the refrigerator until you can. Urine left at room temperature for several hours can allow bacteria to grow, which may affect the test results.

Step 6: Aim for the Best Sample

Whenever possible, collect your dog’s first urine sample of the day, as this provides the most useful information for testing.
